About the JoNI Student Team

The Student Team (and recent graduated) who run our international journal.

The Journal of Nonprofit Innovation (JoNI) is not just a platform for bridging the gap between academic research and nonprofit practice—it’s also driven by a passionate team of student interns who are dedicated to spreading knowledge across the globe. These students are the backbone of JoNI, working behind the scenes to ensure the journal reaches nonprofit leaders and scholars worldwide. Their commitment to promoting high-quality research and fostering collaboration between academia and practitioners is what keeps JoNI thriving.

Bridging the Gap with ‘Pracademia’

At JoNI, we are focused on promoting "pracademia," a growing field that merges academic research with practical, real-world solutions. Nonprofits are on the front lines, tackling some of the most challenging global and community issues, and JoNI serves as a platform where researchers and practitioners can share insights, learn from each other, and create meaningful impact.

The journal has quickly become a trusted resource for both nonprofit professionals and academics who want to make a difference, thanks in large part to the efforts of the student team that curates and promotes this valuable content.

An Open-Access Journal with Global Reach

Since its founding three years ago, JoNI has grown rapidly, reaching readers in 148 countries. As an open-access journal, JoNI ensures that all content is free for everyone, with no paywalls for submitting articles or accessing research. This approach democratizes knowledge, allowing practitioners and scholars alike to share and benefit from new insights in the nonprofit sector.

For those interested in exploring or contributing to JoNI, visit our [website](https://JournalofNonprofitInnovation.org) or our [Scholars Archive](https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/joni), where academics can publish their latest research and nonprofit leaders can submit thought papers that showcase their work on the ground.

The Power of the JoNI Student Intern Team

The heart of JoNI is its volunteer-driven student intern team. These students work tirelessly to ensure the journal is seen by nonprofit leaders around the world and that the content published is timely, relevant, and impactful. They seek out top-quality research on pressing topics and help spread the word to nonprofit organizations, practitioners, and scholars eager to learn. The all-volunteer student team is committed to making sure JoNI continues to provide a platform for innovative thinking in the nonprofit sector. Their dedication ensures that the journal remains a valuable resource for those looking to stay informed about the latest trends and research impacting the nonprofit world.

Erica Jensen

Title: Managing Editor

Job Description: As managing editor, I oversee the publication process for each journal issue. I manage the team of student volunteers and the incredible work they do. I lead weekly team meetings, set the schedule, and train volunteers. I also outreach to external stakeholders to generate more interest in JoNI.

Erica recently has graduated with her master's degree and continues to volunteer at JoNI! She's been such an amazing help in growing this journal to 150 countries.

About Me:

I received a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Editing and Publishing with a minor in Nonprofit Management. One of my work experiences during that time was acting as editor-in-chief at the BYU Ballard Center for Social Impact, where I wrote and helped students write research papers about social issues. In April 2024, I graduated again from BYU with a master’s degree in Public Administration. During my time as a graduate student, I joined the JoNI team as its managing editor, eager to build the journal and create engaging, meaningful content. Professionally, I am a performance auditor for the Utah Office of the Legislative Auditor General. My role there, similar to my role with JoNI, is to help organizations improve. I live in Utah with my husband. Outside of work, I love to read, sing, spend time with family and friends, and eat ice cream.

Why I like JoNI or How I see JoNI is making a difference in the world.

I love the mission of JoNI, which involves bringing about innovative change to solve the world’s most pressing social issues. At JoNI, we boldly believe that our work can transform the lives of nonprofit professionals and the people they serve. With each publication, I see JoNI reaching universities and organizations around the globe, and that encourages me to move forward, knowing JoNI is making a difference.

Mandie Carter

Title: Researcher & Editor

Description: Mandie has been a part of almost every aspect of the journal as we learned from our experiences and changed our responsibilities. She has done research, writing, editing, design and more.

Mandie has been with JoNI for over a year and has been a great support as we grew, espeically as she juggled school, work, moving and more!

About Mandie:

I am a Technical Curriculum Manager pursuing a Master’s in Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning at Boise State University. Dr. Martinez approached me about an opportunity to conduct research and edit for the Journal of Nonprofit Innovation (JoNI). At JoNI I have helped publish multiple issues by conducting research for summary articles, editing submitted academic articles for each article, and helping design and layout journal issues. I decided to volunteer because not only did the opportunity provide a chance to enhance my academic research and writing skills which I can apply to my master's thesis, but I am also helping distribute information about amazing nonprofit organizations that can improve our world to a global audience. Being part of something so special is a life-changing opportunity.
